Setting Up a Hamster Habitat

February 15, 2016

Are you adopting a hamster? Hamsters are super cute, and can make great pets. These little guys are also fairly easy to care for. Making sure your hamster has a clean, comfortable habitat will go a long way towards keeping the little guy happy. Read on for some advice on setting up hamster cages from Arapahoe Animal Hospital, your Boulder, CO veterinary hospital, serving Louisville and surrounding areas.

Choosing The Cage

There are many different types of hamster cages available. If you get a wire cage, pick one with a solid floor, because wire flooring can hurt Hammie’s tiny paws. You can also get a pre-built cage, or even repurpose a large storage tote. Just be sure to pick something that offers suitable ventilation and plenty of room.

Substrate

Aspen is a good choice for hamster substrate. You can also use substrates based on paper or hemp. Avoid substrates made from pine or cedar, as they can be toxic to hamsters.

Furniture

Hammie will need a hidey-hole, so he has somewhere to go if he feels scared or just wants to nap. There are many cute options for little hamster homes you can buy or make your hamster. Your pet will also need a water bottle.

Toys

Offer Hammie lots of fun entertainment options, so he doesn’t get bored. Mazes and labyrinths are always popular with hamsters. Exercise wheels are also fine. Pick a solid one, though, as wire wheels can injure your furry buddy. Your hamster will also need playthings, including plenty of chew toys. Items made of wood, paper, or cardboard are fine, as long as they don’t have sharp edges or small parts. You’ll also want to stay away from things that have been dyed, painted, or varnished. Ask your vet for specific recommendations.

Location Location Location

Finding the perfect spot for your furry pal is very important. Hammie can get very sick if he gets too cold, so keep him in a room that stays between 65 and 75 °F at all times. Don’t put your hamster in direct sunlight, drafty areas, or in a loud spot. Your tiny friend will be happiest in a quiet place where he can see and hear you.
