Adorable Ways Cats Demand Attention

March 15, 2016

Cats may have a reputation for being aloof, but that really isn’t accurate. Some kitties absolutely love to cuddle! Fluffy may want nothing more than snuggle up on your lap and purr herself to sleep. Of course, some cats want attention so much that they’ll go to extremes to get it. In this article from Arapahoe Animal Hospital, your Boulder, CO vet, serving Louisville, CO and the surrounding areas, you’ll learn about how kitties request attention.

The Interception

Have you ever tried to walk away from a kitty that wants to be petted? Fluffy may run out in front of you, or even try to weave around your legs. (Note: cats request both attention and food this way.)

The Leg Rub

When Fluffy rubs against your legs, she may technically be claiming you as her property, by rubbing her scent on you, but for practical purposes, this plea for attention (and/or breakfast) usually works pretty well.

The Computer Block

As far as Fluffy is concerned, spend time online or reading when you’re supposed to be petting her is simply not acceptable. Your furball may sprawl out across your book or keyboard in an attempt to refocus your attention.

The Rampage

Kitties often have a habit of knocking small objects off tables and counters with their paws. This may be another way your feline pal requests attention. Actually, this one is probably more of a demand.

The Claw Snag

One of the more polite ways your furball may request cuddles is to simply reach out a paw and catch your sweater. This is super cute, especially when coupled with an adorable pleading look.

The Head Butt

Another thing cats sometimes do when they want to be petted is to nudge their humans with their heads. Maybe Fluffy just wants to make sure your arm isn’t stuck?

The Direct Approach

Sometimes it pays to just be straight, and ask for what you want. Fluffy will sometimes voice her request plainly, in the form of a cute meow.

The Flop

If Fluffy flops onto her back and invites you to rub her tummy, then you’ve just gotten a very high compliment. In kitty terms, this is a huge sign of trust!
