Caring for Your Dog’s Paws

Caring for Your Dog’s Paws

Does your dog sometimes put his paw on your leg when he wants attention? Fido may also use those furry feet to do cute tricks like Shake Paw. Your dog’s paws are actually crucial to his health and happiness. Caring for your canine buddy’s paws isn’t hard, but it’s very important! In this article from Arapahoe Animal Hospital, your Boulder, CO vet, serving Louisville and the surrounding areas, a vet discusses doggy paw care.

Seasonal Hazards

In summer, Fido can burn his paw pads on hot tar or asphalt. If it’s too hot for you to go barefoot, it’s too hot for him! Keep your four-legged pal on soft ground as much as possible, especially after he’s been swimming. Winter also brings some specific hazards: snow, salt, sand, and chemical de-icing agents can all be rough on your pup’s feet. Booties are a good way to protect your canine friend’s feet, but, of course, not all dogs will tolerate them. Wipe your dog’s paws down with a damp cloth every day, and use paw balm to protect them.

Ticks

You’ll want to check Fido regularly for ticks. Don’t forget those furry feet! Ticks sometimes latch on to dogs’ paws. If you do find a tick, remove it right away with tweezers or a tick puller.

Nails

Don’t let your canine friend’s nails get too long. Overgrown nails are very uncomfortable, and Fido may adjust his stride to compensate. Over time, this can be harmful to your beloved pet’s bones and joints, and can even contribute to painful medical conditions, such as arthritis. If you don’t feel comfortable trimming your dog’s nails yourself, call us to schedule a quick manicure appointment.

Toe Fur

Toe fur tufts are super cute, but you’re better off trimming these back. Those adorable toe fur tufts are prone to getting tangled or picking up gunk, which is very uncomfortable for Fido.

Injuries

If Fido gets a little scratch, you can treat him yourself with an antiseptic. Contact your vet for anything more serious than a little nick, however. Paw infections can be stubborn and dangerous, and you don’t want to take any chances with your furry pal developing one.

If your dog needs veterinary care, call Arapahoe Animal Hospital, your Boulder, CO vet clinic, serving Louisville and the surrounding areas, to set an appointment with your vet.
