Your Cat’s Veterinary Care Needs

August 15, 2016

Has your cat been to the vet lately? If not, this is a great time to make an appointment! While August 22nd is officially Take Your Cat To The Vet Day, proper veterinary care is important to your furball’s health all year round. In this article from Arapahoe Animal Hospital, your Boulder, CO vet, serving Louisville and surrounding areas, a local veterinarian discusses taking Fluffy to the vet.

Kittens

Little Fluffy will need her initial vaccines and examinations, as well as microchipping and spay/neuter surgery. You’ll also want to get your tiny furball started out on parasite control. Ask your vet for specific recommendations on your kitty’s diet and care needs. While you’re there, you may also want to get a few pointers on kittenproofing: kittens are basically furry little bundles of mischief!

Adult Cats

When your feline friend reaches adulthood, she may only need to come in once or twice a year, for exams, vaccines, and dental checkups. You’ll want to keep up with your kitty’s parasite control at home. Ask your vet to recommend a specific appointment schedule, and for updated advice on your pet’s changing nutritional and care needs.

Fluffy’s Golden Years

Just like people, Fluffy will experience some changes in her golden years. She may become forgetful, and her vision could decline. Your vet may also recommend that your kitty come in more often, so her health can be closely monitored. The sooner a health issue is detected, the better! If your feline buddy develops a medical issue, such as arthritis, she may also benefit from pain management treatment. As always, in between appointments, keep up with your cat’s parasite control products, and follow your vet’s advice for feeding and caring for your furry pal.

Emergency Signs

At all stages of your feline pal’s life, you’ll want to keep a close eye out for symptoms of illness. Some of the most common warning signs to watch for include hiding; vomiting; diarrhea; crankiness; changes in vocalizations; poor grooming; weight gain or loss; lack of appetite; litterbox issues; and unusual behavior. If Fluffy has any of these symptoms, or just doesn’t seem like herself, call your vet right away.
