Helping a Senior Dog Settle In

November 1, 2018

November is Adopt a Senior Pet Month! Older dogs make wonderful pets. They’re very sweet and calm, and are typically super affectionate. If you’re considering adopting a pooch in his golden years, you definitely have our support. In this article from Arapahoe Animal Hospital, your Boulder, CO vet, serving Louisville and surrounding areas, a vet offers a few tips on helping your pooch settle in.

Shopping List

Before you bring your new canine companion home, you’ll need to pick up some things for him. A good, comfy bed is a must. We actually recommend orthopedic beds for older dogs, as they offer extra support. Raised doggy dishes are also a good idea. Your four-legged pal may also appreciate pet ramps or stairs to help him get on and off the sofa (assuming he’s allowed) or in and out of the car. You’ll also need to get grooming supplies, food, toys, treats, a leash and harness or collar, a crate, and waste baggies.

Petprooofing

Just as with puppies, you’ll want to take steps to make your home safe for your new canine buddy. However, you’ll need to address different hazards for older pets than you would for puppies. If Fido has vision problems, block off any stairwells with baby gates, so he doesn’t trip and fall down the stairs. If you have a pool, make sure it is fenced off. Good fencing is also a must for anyone with a yard. Ask your vet for more information.

Veterinary Care

One of the first things you’ll want to do is schedule a vet’s appointment. Although Fido will most likely already be fixed, he’ll need a thorough, nose-to-tail exam. It’s also important to make sure your furry buddy is microchipped and up to date on his vaccinations and parasite control. This is a great time to get some specific tips on your dog’s care needs!

Tail Wags

You may want to put all of Fido’s things in a specific area to start. A quiet back room may be a good place. Your furry buddy may sleep a lot at first. Don’t worry: with time, patience, and great care, you’ll have that tail going in no time!
