Adopting a Rescued Bird

There are many wonderful birds that need loving forever homes. Some have been rescued from situations where they were neglected, while others have been put up for adoption after the death of their owners, or through other sad circumstances. Some birds have been surrendered by people who thought they wanted a bird, but later changed their minds. Giving Polly a second chance at happiness is a wonderful act of kindness, and one that can be very rewarding!

Our feathered friends are wonderful pets, but, just like any other animal, there are pros and cons to having them. On the bright side, birds are very cute and charming. Many love to cuddle with their owners. (It’s also worth noting that our fine feathered friends can be absolutely hilarious.) However, Polly can be a bit loud, and she really isn’t the neatest roommate. Do plenty of research before deciding to bring a rescued bird—or any pet—into your home.

Each type of bird is unique, with their own specific personalities and care requirements. For example, a Macaw may be quite loud and playful, while finches can be quiet and timid. Lifespan is another thing to consider. Some birds can live up to 50 years! Learn about different types of birds, and choose one that will fit well with your household.

Before you bring Polly home, you’ll need to get her a good cage, as well as the required accessories, such as toys, perches, and dishes. You’ll have to make your home safe for your winged buddy. Remove or secure anything that could be dangerous, like plastic bags, small or sharp objects, and candles. You’ll also need to address things like window coverings, fans, and toxic plants and foods. Ask your vet for specific birdproofing tips.
