Pet Dental Health Care

February 1, 2019

February is Pet Dental Health Month. Keeping your pet’s choppers healthy is very important! Our furry pals can suffer from a variety of painful dental ailments. In this article from Arapahoe Animal Hospital, your Boulder, CO vet, serving Louisville and surrounding areas, a veterinarian discusses pet dental health care.

Dogs

Brushing Fido’s teeth is a great way to keep his mouth healthy. Start by gently massaging his teeth and gums with your finger. Reward him with treats and praise to sweeten the deal. Next, incorporate a pet toothpaste and toothbrush. No luck? Ask your vet for advice on using dental-formula treats, kibble, and chews, and/or oral rinses.

Cats

Believe it or not, you can brush Fluffy’s teeth without going to the ER. (Maybe.) It’s best to get your furball used to the process when she’s a kitten. However, some older cats do learn to accept having their choppers cleaned. As with dogs, start by gently rubbing your cat’s teeth and gums. You can cover your finger with a finger toothbrush or gauze dipped in tuna water. Next, add some pet toothpaste. Offer treats and praise, so your pet feels pampered. If your kitty fights or tries to scratch you, let her go and try again another day. Oral rinses and dental sticks can also help.

Pocket Pets

Most smaller pets have open-rooted teeth, which never stop growing. Offer your pet lots of suitable chew toys, so they can wear their choppers down. Many wood, wicker, and cardboard items can make great chew toys. Safety first, though: avoid items with small parts, sharp edges, or dangling ropes, or anything that is coated in decorative varnish, stain, or dye.

Symptoms

While each pet may display dental troubles differently, there are some common symptoms, such as bad breath, drooling, swelling, bleeding gums, and tartar buildup. Your pet may also take longer eating and/or start preferring soft foods. Crankiness, withdrawal, and a reduced interest in play can also signify dental issues, though it’s worth noting that these things can be indicative of several health issues. Call your vet immediately if you notice these symptoms. We also recommend getting your pet’s teeth checked at least once a year. Last but not least, make sure your furry friend always has fresh water.
