Anxiety in Cats

March 1, 2019

Cats are very emotional little furballs. Fluffy can be quite affectionate, and often gets extremely attached to her humans. Our furry friends can also be adversely affected by stress. In this article from Arapahoe Animal Hospital, your Boulder, CO vet, serving Louisville and surrounding areas, a local vet discusses feline anxiety.

Causes of Anxiety

Kitties don’t have to concern themselves with finances, jobs, relationships, or many other things that people have to worry about. Instead, major changes, such as moving or changing owners, are often a cause of stress for our feline pals. Fluffy may also be upset by the addition or loss of a roommate, either two-legged or four-legged, or by a death or birth in the household. Medical issues can also cause anxiety. Some pets also are unsettled by loud noises, or even just a lot of commotion.

Symptoms

Cats don’t always express their anxiety the same way. One kitty may become extra clingy, while another may withdraw and hide. Fluffy may eat more or less than usual. Or, she may start neglecting her beauty routines, in which case her fur will start to look unkempt. Some cats become aggressive, and lash out at their humans or other pets. You may also notice litterbox issues and/or unusual vocalizations. Many of these things can be cause by health issues. We recommend having your cat examined by a vet if you notice any of these symptoms, to rule out possible medical problems.

Helping Kitty Cope

There are some things you can do to help your furry buddy feel better. If you suspect that Fluffy is reacting to a major change, such as a move, just give her time and TLC. If your kitty seems frightened, offer her plenty of hiding spots, so she can withdraw if she likes. Make sure your cute pet has plenty of toys to play with, and take time to play with her every day. This will help your feline friend burn off her excess energy. Fluffy will be much calmer after a fun play session! Cat-calming products, which mimic the scent of ‘happy pheromones, can also soothe nervous furballs. Last but not least, pay lots of attention to your kitty, and make sure she feels loved and safe.
