Creating a Dog-Safe Yard

May 15, 2019

Do you have a yard for your dog to run around in? If so, that’s wonderful! Dogs love getting outdoors and enjoying some fresh air and sunshine. Why not give your yard a pupgrade? In this article from Arapahoe Animal Hospital, your Boulder, CO vet, serving Louisville and surrounding areas, a local vet offers some advice on making your yard both fun and safe for your furry buddy.

Fencing

Make sure that your fencing is sturdy. It should be too tall for Fido to jump over, and too solid for him to dig under. If you know or suspect that your canine pal may try to make himself an escape tunnel, bury chicken wire along the fence and weight it down with rocks.

Doghouse

Our canine companions should live indoors, with their human friends. However, that doesn’t mean Fido won’t enjoy having a doghouse outdoors. Opt for something that offers great insulating qualities. Wood is a good choice. Don’t use pressure-treated wood, though, as it’s toxic to dogs. The doghouse should also be raised off the ground to keep rain and snow out.

Plants

Make sure that there are no toxic plants growing in your yard. Foxtail grasses are one thing to look for. You can find a full list of safe and unsafe plants online at the ASPCA site here .

Gate

We strongly recommend getting a self-latching gate. It’s far too easy for a meter reader or guest to leave a gate open. Many dogs have escaped this way!

Pool

Want to really get your pup’s tail wagging? Get a kiddie pool for him to splash around in on hot days. You can also let your pooch play in the spray from a hose or sprinkler.

Sandbox

Does your canine buddy like to bury things? Get your four-legged pirate a sandbox to play in! Your pet will also appreciate some outdoor toys, such as a tug toy.

Garden

There’s no reason you can’t have both a dog and a garden. Use borders, such as low walls, fences, or logs, to section off a part of the yard to use for planting. This will help keep Fido from trampling over or digging up your beds.
