6 Reasons to Hug Your Cat

June 1, 2019

Hug Your Cat Day is June 4th! While we think every day should be Hug Your Cat Day, we definitely think that all of our feline patients deserve extra cuddles on this special occasion. In this article from Arapahoe Animal Hospital, your Boulder, CO vet, serving Louisville and surrounding areas, a vet discusses hugging Fluffy.

Bonding

Cats are always happiest when they feel loved. Many of these furballs love to cuddle, and will start purring as soon as you pet them or pick them up. Paying attention to your kitty will help keep her content, and keep that adorable smug/happy expression on Fluffy’s face. This is also a great way to comfort or bond with your furry friend.

Purr Activation

Fluffy’s soothing purr actually has some very special qualities. Cats purr at frequencies of 25-140 Hertz. These frequencies have been shown to promote healing, and are even used in physical therapy!

Relax

Hugging cats can be very relaxing! In fact, cuddling with a kitty can really help soothe people who are going through hard times or even just having a bad day. In fact, our feline friends can help people cope with anxiety, depression, stress, trauma, PTSD, and other issues. That’s one reason therapy cats are becoming more popular.

Smile

It’s almost impossible not to smile when you pick up your cat. Fluffy shows her affection in some pretty adorable ways, but she’s extra cute when she’s enjoying being held. She may close her eyes if you rub her ears or forehead, nudge you gently, or even doze off.

View

Many of our feline pals love climbing to high places. Fluffy doesn’t really get a great view from ground level! If you pick your furry buddy up to hug her, she’ll probably take the opportunity to get a good look at her kingdom.

Tips For Hugging Cats

Not all cats enjoy being hugged. Some of our furry pals would much rather be admired from a distance. If your feline buddy isn’t much for cuddling, get her motor going by talking to her, playing with her, and offering toys and treats. Of course, even if your furball enjoys hugs, let her go when she wants to get down.
