7 Reasons To Adopt A Senior Dog

November 1, 2019

November is Adopt A Senior Pet Month! Older dogs have a really hard time getting adopted, but they actually make wonderful pets. In fact, there are some great benefits to getting senior dogs. In this article from Arapahoe Animal Hospital, your Boulder, CO vet, serving Louisville and surrounding areas, a vet lists some great reasons to adopt older pooches.

Less Active

As you probably know, puppies are very active. Many of our younger canine patients are basically furry, four-legged bundles of zoom. It can be quite challenging keeping up with a baby dog’s playtime and activity needs! Older pooches, however, don’t have that much energy. They’re typically quite content to just hang out with their humans, napping and collecting treats and belly rubs.

What You See Is What You Get

When you adopt a puppy, you’ll have to guess at what Fido will look—and act—like when he’s all grown up. This definitely isn’t an issue with senior dogs!

Shorter Commitment

Since senior dogs don’t have as much time left, the commitment is shorter. However, before adopting any pooch, it’s important to be sure that you are committed to caring for that dog for his entire life. Fido gets extremely attached to his human friends, so being rehomed can be quite traumatic for him!

Prior Training

Another great thing about dogs in their golden years is the fact that most of them are already trained. Chances are, Fido is already housebroken and knows the do’s and don’ts of being a good boy.

Less Destructive

Puppies are adorable, but they can get into mischief. Older pooches, however, have typically outgrown the urge to dig, chew, and chase squirrels around. Fido probably won’t terrorize the cat, either!

Helping Pets Feels Great

If there’s one thing we know for sure, it’s that helping an animal in need is very rewarding and fulfilling. Many older dogs have been abandoned by their owners, sometimes after a lifetime of devotion. It’s a truly beautiful thing to see these lovable pooches getting second chances.

They’re Absolutely Adorable

Last but not least, senior dogs are super cute! Don’t be surprised if Fido melts your heart with his sweet face, tail wags, and soulful puppy eyes.
