Helping a Rescue Dog Settle In

May 15, 2020

May 20 th is Adopt A Rescue Dog Day! If you are giving a lucky pooch a second chance, you definitely have our support! In this article from Arapahoe Animal Hospital, your Boulder, CO vet, serving Louisville and surrounding areas, a local vet offers some tips on helping Fido adjust to his new home.

Shopping

Before bringing your pup home, you’ll need to do some shopping. Fido will need bedding, food, toys, treats, dishes, grooming supplies, and a collar or harness. As for food, if you know what your pet has been eating, get that to start. Consult your vet before making changes. We also recommend getting a really sturdy leash. That way, if your canine pal tries to bolt unexpectedly, you’ll have a good grip on him.

Preparing

You’ll need to make sure that your home is both safe and escape proof. If you have a yard, make sure that your fencing is secure, and that Fido can’t get out by jumping over it or digging under it. We also recommend getting a self-latching gate. Some petprooofing is also in order.

Coming Home

Put Fido’s things in one room initially. This will give your furry friend a comfy, safe spot to relax, recoup, and settle in. Of course, this somewhat depends on how your home is set up, and whether you have other pets. If you have another dog, introduce them before finalizing the adoption, to make sure they will get along. If you have a cat, keep Fido and Fluffy separated at first. Ask your vet for specific advice on making introductions.

Schedule

Dogs feel most secure when they are on a set schedule. Get Fido started on his new doggy schedule for meals, walks, and playtime right away.

Be Prepared

It’s a truly amazing experience to watch a rescue dog blossom and grow with love and good care. However, don’t be surprised if you hit some bumps along the way. Fido may need to work on his training, and he may have some quirks, phobias, or bad habits you don’t know about yet. Don’t punish your furry friend for transgressions. Focus on rewarding him for being good. With time, love and patience, you’ll be getting tail wags and happy dances in no time!
