6 Adorable Ways to Pamper a Guinea Pig

July 15, 2020

Do you have a Guinea pig? These little guys are very cute and fun pets. They also make great animal companions for kids! However, it’s important to make sure that your Guinea pig—or cavy, as they are also known—has a good quality of life. We believe that all pets should feel happy, healthy, and loved. In this article from Arapahoe Animal Hospital, your Boulder, CO vet, serving Louisville and surrounding areas, a vet offers tips on how to properly spoil a cavy.

Free Time

Guinea pigs are both playful and curious. Your cute pet may get bored if he is stuck in his cage all the time! Let your furry friend enjoy some free time. Ideally, you’ll want to do this every day.

Cuddles

One great thing about cavies is the fact that they are actually much more sociable than many other pets. Some of them even like to doze off in their humans’ laps. Pay attention to the little guy! Pet him, play with him, and try teaching him some tricks.

Treats!

Many of these little furballs have a sweet tooth. Although you shouldn’t give your pint-size pal too much sugar, you can offer him some safe fruit as a special snack. Some good options are banana, blueberries, and apples. Just be sure to research anything new before giving it to your pet. Not all foods are safe for cavies!

Toys

Guinea pigs are quite playful. Buy or make your tiny buddy some new toys. Chew toys are great options. Many wood, wicker, cardboard, and paper are fine, though you’ll want to avoid anything with sharp edges or small parts. Ask your vet for more information.

Comfy Beds

Look for a comfy bed for your tiny pal. You can also buy or make your furry friend a cozy, which is basically a very small tent/sleeping bag.

Buddies

Guinea pigs are very sociable, and they’re always happier when they have friends. If you only have one cavy, please consider getting your miniature furball a roommate or two. You get to enjoy twice the cuteness without doubling your expenses. Just be sure to only keep same-sex cavies together. Otherwise, they’ll breed.
