Celebrating DOGust

August 1, 2020

Today, August 1st, is DOGust, the official shelter dog birthday! The Puparazzi are pretty excited about this special doggy holiday, and with good reason. Many of our canine patients were adopted from shelters. Since it’s almost impossible to know exactly when shelter pups were born, there is now one official day to celebrate their birthdays. In this article from Arapahoe Animal Hospital, your Boulder, CO vet, serving Louisville and surrounding areas, a local vet lists some fun ways to honor Fido’s special day.

Treats

If there’s one thing all of our canine pals love, it’s treats. This is a special occasion, so go ahead and give Fido something special. Plain, cooked meat is fine, as long as you remove the skin, bones, and fat. You can also make your pooch some pupcakes, or even a birthday cake. Look online for recipes. Just stick to ingredients that are safe for dogs.

Toys

Fido is always adorable when he spots a new toy. That joyful doggy exuberance is bound to put a smile on your face! Pick up a new plaything for your pup. You can always go for a classic toy, such as a tennis ball or plush toy. Or, try something new, like an automated laser pointer. You can also go the DIY route and make something. This is a great project for kids!

Photos

Man’s Best Friend is definitely very photogenic. Snap some cute photos of your furry companion! You can even put a little birthday hat on your pup, as long as the strap isn’t too tight. Play around with different effects and frames, and share the photos on social media. If your kids are home for the summer, have them take some pics of Fido, or draw him.

Adopt

One of the bright spots of the past year is the fact that many shelters emptied as people stepped up to adopt homeless dogs during the pandemic. Consider your household, budget, and other pets. If all lights are green, go for it. This is the perfect time to adopt!

Walks

Take Fido to explore a new trail, or bring him to a park. Fresh air, sunlight, and exercise will benefit you both. The day might have gone to the dogs, but that’s a good thing in our book!
