Autumn Hazards for Cats

October 15, 2020

Autumn is officially upon us! Foliage, warm sweaters, and pumpkin-flavored everything are on the agenda for many of us over the coming weeks. However, this can be a dangerous time for cats, so you’ll want to take steps to keep Fluffy safe and purring as the leaves change. In this article from Arapahoe Animal Hospital, Boulder, CO animal clinic, serving Louisville and surrounding areas, a veterinarian lists some seasonal hazards for kitties.

Temperatures

Temperatures can plummet quickly at this time of year. Keep your kitty safe and sound indoors, and make sure she has plenty of warm, cozy beds to snuggle up in. If Fluffy seems to get stiff and sore in cold weather, ask your vet for advice.

Wild Animals

As it cools off, wild animals will be seeking places to hibernate. They may be a bit cranky, and could be more prone to attacking than usual. Some will also burrow into piles of leaves. This is another reason we recommend keeping your pet inside. However, if you do let Fluffy out, make sure that she is current on her vaccinations and parasite control.

Plants/Foliage

Many late-blooming plants are toxic to kitties. If you like putting out autumn plants or bouquets, check to make sure that they are safe for Fluffy. You can find a full list of safe and unsafe plants at the ASPCA website here.

Candles/Heaters

Those pumpkin and cinnamon candles really can be the finishing touch for a cozy fall glow. However, they are definitely not safe for kitties. Be sure to burn candles in high spots your furball can’t reach. Wall sconces are a good bet. You’ll also need to be careful with heaters and fireplaces.

Chemicals

Many people treat their lawns and gardens in fall. Fluffy could ingest these dangerous substances just by walking through a recently treated patch and then licking her paws. This is also a popular time to fill vehicles up with antifreeze, which is extremely toxic to cats. Mop up spills right away, or cover them with sand or cat litter.

Decorations

Kitties are adorable when they’re being playful, but that frisky streak can get them into trouble. Anything small or sharp is a hazard, as are items with dangling threads or cords.
