Doggy Wheelchairs: Pups On Wheels

October 15, 2021

Have you ever seen videos of dogs in wheelchairs? More and more pets are joyfully rolling through life, with wagging tails and adorable happy-dog grins. In this article from Arapahoe Animal Hospital, your Boulder, CO veterinary hospital, serving Louisville and surrounding areas, a vet discusses putting Fido on wheels.

Basics

Most of the time, dogs are in wheelchairs because they’re fully or partially paralyzed, or perhaps missing a limb. (Dachshunds are one of the breeds most often found on wheels, as their long backs make them prone to spinal injuries.) Wheelchairs can also be used to help dogs with arthritis, hip dysplasia, balance problems, and/or neurological issues. However, in some cases, the wheelchair may only be used temporarily, as a pooch is recovering from injury or surgery.

Tail Wags

Many people assume that Fido can’t be happy in a wheelchair, but that actually isn’t the case. There are plenty of videos of pups racing—or, rather, rolling—around at full speed, having the time of their lives. Dogs adapt very well to many medical issues. Plus, after losing mobility, they are often absolutely delighted to be able to move around again.

Types Of Wheelchairs

Getting the right type and size wheelchair is crucial. Some are made for pooches that can’t use their front legs, while others are specifically designed for pups who can’t use their back ones. You’ll also find wheelchairs for pets that need extra support all the way around, and some for those who are missing limbs completely.

Getting Started

Wheelchairs are great, but they aren’t the right option for every pup. If you think your furry buddy may benefit from a wheelchair, consult your vet. Don’t move forward unless they give you the green light.

Safety

Wheelchairs can be a great option for Fido. However, you’ll need to take some safety precautions. Don’t use a pet wheelchair near potential hazards, such as fire pits; pools; hills, cliffs, and riverbanks; or busy roads. You’ll also need to supervise your canine companion very closely during walks. Never let him roll around unattended, even for a minute!

Walk N’ Roll

Fido isn’t the only animal you may find rolling around. There have also been wheelchairs made for cats, rabbits, goats, sheep, and even ducks!
