Cat Herder’s Day

December 15, 2021

Did you know that today is a very important cat holiday? It’s International Cat Herder’s Day! Of course, this may be a bit purrplexing. Our feline buddies are definitely not easy to corral. in this article from Arapahoe Animal Hospital, your Boulder, CO vet, serving Louisville and surrounding areas, a local vet takes a closer look at this ‘pawspicious’ kitty occasion.

Herding Fluffy

As anyone with a feline friend of their own can vouch for, cats are very independent, and don’t really take direction well. However, there are a few ways to more or less trick Fluffy into doing what you want. Empty boxes, sunbeams, and paper grocery bags are all extremely effective kitty magnets, which your furry friend will have a hard time resisting. You can also take advantage of your pet’s built-in predatory instincts. Point a laser pointer in the direction you want your furball to go, or toss a toy or mouse that way. Chances are, Fluffy’s curiosity will get the best of her, and she’ll run after it, just to see what it is.

Calling Kitties

Many cats actually do come when their humans call them. It’s pretty cute to see Fluffy come running on her little legs when you call her name. In the past, can openers were a pretty effective way to summon our feline overlords, but most of today’s furballs are more used to can openers. You can try opening a pop top, opening the cupboard where you store your fuzzy pal’s treats, or rattling a jar of treats. Another option is to try changing your sheets. Kitties are contractually obligated to at least try to help with this! Results may vary.

Reverse Herding

Sometimes, you may need to get Fluffy out of your way. Your best bet is probably to make a loud noise. Bang two pots together, sound a bike horn, or rattle a jar of change. Your furry buddy will probably race out of the room at top kitty speed!

Other Occasions

Cat Herder’s Day isn’t the only silly holiday dedicated to our feline friends. Fluffy has her own version of New Year’s Day coming up January 2nd: it’s Happy Mew Year Day. Then there’s Cinco de Meow on May 5th, and Cat World Domination Day on June 24th.
