Puppyproofing Tips

March 15, 2022

National Puppy Day is March 23rd! If you’ve recently adopted a puppy, you’re definitely in for some very adorable moments … and a lot of pet parenting. Little Fido is as frisky and mischievous as he is cute! You’ll need to take some precautions to make your home safe. A local vet offers some puppyproofing tips in this article from Arapahoe Animal Hospital, your Boulder, CO vet serving Louisville and surrounding areas.

Small/Sharp Objects

Anything small or sharp is a huge concern. Some of the things you may want to be careful with are thread spools, golf balls, lipsticks, cell phones, batteries, nails, screws, safety pins, craft kit pieces, sewing kit pieces, pens and pencils, scissors, and manicure sets. (You may not think that little FIdo would be interested in eating these things, but you really never know.)

Plastics

Plastic bags and ties are major choking hazards. Keep things like plastic grocery bags and food wrappers out of paws’ reach. It’s also best to get into the habit of cutting the rings that hold beverage packs together.

Wires and Cords

Your furry pal could get seriously hurt by chewing a live wire! Use taste deterrents on things you can’t move out of reach.

Medicine

Medicines are one of the most common causes of pet poisoning cases. Dogs sometimes chew on the bottles, and end up ingesting medicine. Be very careful with your medications, both OTC and prescription! This is also something to keep in mind if you have guests stay over.

Clothing

Small items of clothing, like socks and underwear, often prove to be tempting targets for curious pups. Keep these in hampers with lids!

Trash

Little Fido isn’t above searching through your garbage can in search of leftovers. Given that pretty much everything in the trash is unsafe (or at the very least, unsanitary) it’s a good idea to use cans with lids that close securely.

Chemicals

Many common household items are toxic to our canine companions. This includes lawn and garden products, such as fertilizers, pesticides, herbicide, and fungicides. Products like household cleaners, automotive products, and paints are also unsafe. Little Fido only has to walk through a spill and lick his paws to ingest these dangerous substances!
