Tips For Choosing Pet Supplements

January 15, 2023

Do you give your furry friend any vitamins or supplements? Have you been considering it? Just like us, our animal companions’ bodies need specific nutrients to function properly. Certain supplements can help support various organs and functions, and/or just provide a boost.. However, there are some things to be aware of. In this article from Arapahoe Animal Hospital, your Boulder, CO animal clinic, serving Louisville, CO and surrounding areas, a vet goes over some things to consider when picking supplements.

Talk To Your Vet

Consult your vet before offering your furry friend any supplements. All animals are different, so it’s important to choose something that is suited to your four-legged pal, and their specific needs. Be extra careful if your pet is currently on medication. Choosing the wrong type of supplement may end up doing more harm than good!

Start Slow

Some pets have trouble metabolizing supplements. Keep a close eye out for any changes or adverse reactions.

Fido

There are several types of supplements for dogs: multivitamins, antioxidants, amino and fatty acids, and prebiotics and probiotics. These all provide different benefits. For instance, Omega 3 and 6 are good for your canine pal’s skin and coat, and are also good for his bones and joints. Other bone and joint supplements include glucosamine and vitamin K.

Fluffy

Think twice before getting your cat supplements. Fluffy should get all of the nutrition and nourishment she needs simply from her diet. Our feline pals usually only need supplements if they have a medical condition or nutritional deficiency. That said, some kitties may benefit from hairball preventative. Ask your vet for specific advice.

Don’t Substitute Human Products

Not all of the vitamins and minerals that are good for us are healthy—or even safe—for Fido. Things you may find in our vitamins and supplements, such as calcium, green tea, and vitamin D, are toxic to dogs.

Brands

Once you know what type of supplement your pet needs, you’ll have to choose one. Read reviews, do plenty of research, and go with a reputable, well-trusted brand. Check the label for a lot number: that’s an indication that the product has been through quality control. We also recommend choosing products made here in North America.
