5 Key Points of Responsible Dog Ownership

September 1, 2016

Did you know that September is Responsible Dog Ownership Month? While we of course believe responsible dog ownership is important all the time, we do want to take a few moments to go over some key points of good dog care. In this article from Arapahoe Animal Hospital, your Boulder, CO vet, serving Louisville and surrounding areas, a local vet discusses responsible dog ownership.

Veterinary Care

Regular veterinary care is very important to your pet’s health. As a puppy, Fido will need his initial vaccines and exams, as well as parasite control, microchipping, and spay or neuter surgery. Adult dogs need annual or biannual exams, vaccines, parasite control, and dental care. As your pooch ages, he may need to see the vet more often, so his health can be monitored. Ask your vet for specific advice.

Training

Proper training is important for good petiquette, but it’s also crucial for safety purposes. Make sure your canine buddy knows—and obeys—basic commands, such as Sit , Stay , Come , Heel , and Lay Down . This basic training can help you stop your pup from running off or approaching unsafe areas. If Fido doesn’t have these important commands mastered, he may need to go back to school!

Safety

Take time to do some puppyproofing: remove or secure toxic plants; household chemicals; small items; plastic bags; medicines; and anything that could choke or entangle your four-legged pal. If you have a yard, make sure that your fence is secure. Never let Fido run around unleashed off your property, unless he’s in a fenced doggy playground.

Comfort

Keep Fido’s comfort and safety in mind, especially as he ages. Make sure your pooch has a good doggy bed, so he can sleep comfortably. If he spends time outdoors, you’ll need to provide suitable shade and shelter, as well as fresh water. Regular grooming and nail trims are also important for your pup’s comfort. Last but not least, provide your canine pal with lots of fun toys to play with when he’s alone.

Tail Wags

Man’s Best Friend really wants nothing more than to spend time with you. Pay attention to your loyal pet, and spend time with him every day. Fido’s unconditional love and unwavering devotion are truly precious gifts!
