November is Adopt A Senior Pet Month! This is a wonderful cause, and one we are happy to promote. Older dogs and cats make wonderful animal companions. If you’re considering adopting a senior pet, you have our wholehearted support. In this article from Arapahoe Animal Hospital, your Boulder, CO vet, serving Louisville and the surrounding areas, you’ll read about five things to do when adopting a senior cat.
Go Shopping
A bit of shopping is definitely in order. Your feline friend will need food, treats, toys, and bedding. You’ll need to get a litterbox and litter as well. Choose a litterbox with low walls, as this will be easier for your furball to get in and out of. We also recommend getting a good carrier and some cat furniture. You’ll get bonus purrs if you give Fluffy a comfy window seat, where she can watch birds and squirrels.
Schedule A Veterinary Appointment
If you’re adopting Fluffy from a shelter, she will probably already be spayed or neutered, and should be current on her vaccines and parasite control. However, your kitty will still need a thorough exam. If your pet does have any medical issues, it’s important to get her diagnosed and treated immediately. Microchipping is also recommended. During your appointment, ask your vet for advice on your cat’s diet and care.
Prepare For Fluffy’s Arrival
Put all of Fluffy’s things in a quiet back room, like a spare bedroom. This will give your furball a comfy, cozy place to relax and settle in. You may also want to get some pet ramps or stairs to help your kitty climb onto the sofa or bed.
Let Love Grow
Some cats are super affectionate furballs that will hop into your lap as soon as they get home. Others need some time to acclimate. Don’t force attention on Fluffy: just focus on paying her lots of attention, and giving her great care.
Pat Yourself On The Back
By adopting a senior kitty, you’re doing a wonderful thing. Older cats are often passed over for young furballs, and can have a very hard time getting adopted. These sweet, lovable kitties are super cute, and have lots of purrs and cuddles to offer!
