6 Great Bird Care Tips

January 15, 2017

Do you have a pet bird? Our feathered friends make very adorable and charming little pets! Caring for a bird isn’t difficult, but it is very different than taking care of a dog or cat. In this article from Arapahoe Animal Hospital, your Boulder, CO vet, serving Louisville and surrounding areas, you’ll read some great bird care tips.

Birdproof

Many common household items are dangerous to birds. Chemicals, medicines, sharp items, small objects, and plastic bags are a few common hazards. Fans, windows, mirrors, and window treatments can also pose a threat. Vapors and fumes are another concern: Polly can get very sick by breathing things like cooking fumes, aerosols, cigarette smoke, perfume, or vapors from paint or chemicals. Ask your vet for birdproofing advice.

Provide A Great Cage

One of the best things you can do for little Polly is to make sure she feels safe and comfortable in her cage. Typically, the cage will be the most expensive thing you get for your bird, so it’s definitely something to splurge on. Different kinds of birds have different habitat requirements, so ask your vet for specific advice.

Don’t Let Polly Get Bored

Living in a cage can get very dull! To keep your cute little pal from getting bored and unhappy, you’ll need to provide her with a variety of fun toys. Change Polly’s playthings and perches out frequently to keep things fresh and exciting for her.

Free Time!

Make sure that your winged buddy gets out of her cage for at least a few hours every day. Spend time with Polly when she is out and about. You may even be able to teach your pet some words or cute tricks!

Watch For Signs of Illness

Just like any other pet, Polly can get sick. Keep a close eye on your colorful pal, and watch for any signs of illness. Some common ones are lethargy, unusual vocalizations, changes in stools, and/or a lack of appetite. Contact your vet immediately if you notice anything wrong.

Offer Suitable Food

Providing your feathered friend with a healthy, nutritious diet will go a long way towards keeping her in good health. Ask your vet for nutritional recommendations.
