Does your canine pal run for cover when he hears the word
While we suspect that Fido really enjoys feeling fresh and clean after a bath, he isn’t all that enthusiastic about the process of getting there. Of course, doggy bathtime isn’t always fun for us, either. We’re here to help! In this article from Arapahoe Animal Hospital, your Boulder, CO vet serving Louisville and surrounding areas, a local vet offers some doggy bathing hacks.
Fido Shower Caddy
Keep all of your furry friend’s bathing supplies in a dedicated shower caddy. That way, when it’s time for Fido’s bath, you’ll have everything in one spot.
Clip your pup’s claws a day or two before you bathe him. This will help prevent scratches. You may also want to put a rubber mat down in the bottom of your tub.
If you have a hard time getting your pooch into the tub, do some desensitization training. Call Fido into the bathroom, and have him hop into the tub. Then, just give him a yummy treat and let him go. After a few rounds of this, your furry friend will most likely start rethinking his opinion of the bathtub!
Get a clear shower curtain, and cut two 4’ slits in it, about shoulder-width apart, going from the bottom of the curtain up. When it’s time for Fido’s beauty session, you can put your arms through the slits, so you won’t get splashed so much. You may also want to wear an apron.
Use a shower cap to keep water out of Fido’s ears. (Tip: this can also make for some adorable pictures!)
A pitcher or teapot can come in really handy for rinsing. You can also look for tub attachments made just for washing pets.
Brush The Pup
Brush Fido before you give him his bath. This will help remove dead fur and dander from his coat. You’ll also have less pet fur to get out of the tub!
Get a few thick sheets of plastic, and lean them against the bathroom walls. When Fido jumps out of the tub and starts shaking himself, the water will hit the plastic, rather than your wall.
