Preparing Your Dog for Winter

October 15, 2017

Can you believe winter is just around the corner? Whether you are mourning the end of summer, or looking forward to winter activities, you’ve likely already started some seasonal preparations. Don’t forget about Fido! In this article from Arapahoe Animal Hospital, your Boulder, CO vet clinic, serving Louisville and surrounding areas, a local vet discusses preparing your dog for winter.

Paw Prep

Snow, salt, sand, and de-icing agents can all do quite a number on Fido’s furry feet! When you purchase de-icing products, be sure to choose pet-friendly brands. Also, be sure to keep your canine buddy’s nails clipped. Long nails are very uncomfortable for dogs, and can make it hard for them to get traction on slippery surfaces.

Clothes

If your pooch has thin fur, he may need some extra protection against the cold. Before you go shopping for Fido, text yourself his measurements, so you always have them with you. Avoid anything that is tight, itchy, or constricting, as well as anything that has dangling parts or buttons that could choke or entangle your furry pal. We also recommend sticking with items that are machine-washable.

Food

If Fido is a senior, working dog, puppy, or nursing mama, or if he just spends a lot of time outdoors, he may need extra calories in winter. Your canine friend may also benefit from certain supplements. Fish oil, for instance, will help keep your dog’s bones and joints lubricated. This can be very helpful for pets that get stiff and sore in cold weather. Ask your vet for specific advice.

Bedding

Your four-legged friend will really appreciate having a comfy bed to snuggle up in on cold days. Give Fido’s bedding a good washing, and add some cozy blankets. If you really want to pamper your pup, consider getting him a heated bed.

Doghouse

Does your furry buddy have a doghouse? If so, that’s great! Take a few hours to prep it for cold weather. Give Fido’s doghouse a thorough cleaning, and hang thick plastic, rubber, or carpet strips from the door to keep the wind out. Also, make sure the doghouse is properly insulated, and is situated in good spot, with the door facing away from prevailing winds.
