Exercising Your Dog in Winter

December 1, 2017

Winter is just around the corner! As the temperatures keep dropping, many of us are spending a lot more time indoors. Your dog may also stay inside more on frigid days. After all, it isn’t much fun taking a relaxing walk in freezing weather! However, it is important to keep your pet active. Just like people, dogs need proper exercise in order to stay healthy. In this article from Arapahoe Animal Hospital, your Boulder, CO vet, serving Louisville and surrounding areas, a local vet discusses exercising your dog in winter.

Indoor Activities

There are actually quite a few ways you can keep your dog moving indoors. You can play Fetch with Fido inside. Another option is to hold a laser pointer, so he can chase after that elusive red dot. Just be sure to choose a spot without a lot of breakable objects.

Stair Runs

To increase the intensity of Fido’s workout, combine Fetch with stair runs. Go to the top of the stairs, holding your dog’s favorite toy, and call him to you. When he reaches you, toss the toy down the stairs for him to fetch and retrieve.

Treadmill

Did you know that some dogs enjoy walking or running on treadmills? Just be sure to put safety first! Start slow, to let your canine friend get used to the machine. Always remove Fido’s collar or harness before putting him on the treadmill,  and never leave him on a treadmill unsupervised.

Outdoor Sports

If you have an active pooch, Fido actually may not mind spending time outdoors in winter. Your pet may even enjoy winter doggy sports, such as skijoring. This is basically when you get on skis, and let your dog pull you along. Just be sure to get the green light from your vet first. (Needless to say, this isn’t a good option for small dogs.)

Tips

Every dog’s exercise needs are a little different. Some pups may only need a short walk around the block, while others require lots of vigorous activity every day. Fido’s exact activity requirements will depend on his age, weight, breed, and health, so be sure to ask your vet for recommendations. Be careful not to overexert your pet!
