Caring For A Brachycephalic Dog

Many of these cute pooches have big ‘bug’ eyes. These are of course absolutely adorable. However, brachys have very shallow eye sockets, which can cause problems. Watch for warning signs of eye trouble, such as squinting, redness, or watery eyes. Short dogs are extra susceptible, as they’re closer to the ground, and often get dust in their eyes.

Brachys have such short air passages, so they lose their breath very quickly, and are prone to developing breathing problems. Because panting isn’t as effective for them as it is for other breeds, they also can overheat easily. Don’t encourage Fido to run or play too much, especially when it’s hot outside. Swimming is also off the table, though your pooch can wade or splash around in shallow water or a kiddie pool if he likes.

Regular collars can be problematic for brachys, as they can block airflow, which is a big concern with these guys. Use a harness, rather than a collar, on your canine companion. Also, in summer, walk your dog in the mornings and evenings, when it’s not quite as hot out.

Brachys are also a bit prone to dental issues, such as overcrowding. Keep up with your pup’s dental care needs!

Some brachys, such as pugs, have a lot of skin folds. Be sure to keep these clean, as otherwise your furry buddy could develop yeast infections.

Many brachycephalic dogs are basically furry couch potatoes, who love to eat and sleep. This makes them very lovable pets, of course. However, Fido can gain weight very easily, which can expose him to additional health problems. Keep your four-legged friend at a healthy weight.
