6 Things You Learn When You Adopt A Bunny

February is Adopt A Rescued Rabbit Month! While we always love seeing pets go to loving homes, this is a great time to talk about bunnies. Bunnies have open-rooted teeth. This means their little choppers will never stop growing. Floppy will need to chew constantly to wear her teeth down. You’ll need to do some bunnyproofing in order to keep your cute pet safe … and stop her from eating your belongings.

If you don’t know what a binkie is, you’re in for a pretty cute treat when you see your first one. Binkies are basically bunny happy dances. Bunnies may do binkies when they get treats or new toys, or sometimes just when they’re feeling cheerful.

Molting is the official term for what happens when bunnies shed. Rabbits blow their whole coats at once, and then grow new fur. In other words, Floppy will essentially explode a few times a year. You’ll need to brush your pet daily when she’s molting, to help keep her from ingesting fur. Ask your vet for specific advice.

Don’t let that adorable furry face fool you! Rabbits can be very stubborn, and they definitely let you know when you’ve displeased them. Some of Floppy’s pet peeves include not getting enough free time, having her cage rearranged, and, of course, being late with her dinner.

Given the option, Floppy would love to have fruit at every meal. However, that’s way too much sugar for your furry pal. Floppy can have occasional treats, like strawberries or pieces of banana, but don’t overindulge her. Also, be sure to research new foods before offering them to your fuzzy friend. Not all foods are safe for bunnies!

Floppy will need lots of chew toys. She’ll also need plenty of playthings that will just keep her amused. You can make many bunny toys yourself out of common household items, like wood, wicker, and cardboard. Ask your vet for more information.
