Do you have a bunny, gerbil, hamster, or Guinea pig? These little guys are super cute, and can make charming little pets! However, you may want to take a few steps to keep your adorable buddy safe and healthy during the holidays. In this article from Arapahoe Animal Hospital, your Boulder, CO vet, serving Louisville and surrounding areas, a vet offers tips on celebrating the holidays with a tiny furball.
Food
Food is a big part of many holiday celebrations. There’s no reason you can’t offer your furry friend something special! Just stick to safe, suitable snacks. Every pet has unique needs, so ask your vet for specific advice. That said, some things are bad for most, if not all, of our animal companions. This list includes things like garlic, onions, and scallions; chocolate; alcohol; processed foods; caffeine; and anything containing xylitol.
Commotion
Small animals are often very timid, and can get very stressed out or frightened by commotion or loud noises. If you’re hosting events, you may want to put your pint-sized pal in a quiet back room before people show up.
Decorating
Who says you can’t decorate a pocket pet’s cage? You can buy or make some adorable seasonal hidey-holes. You can also hang tinsel, lights, and other decorations on the outside of your pet’s cage. Just make sure your four-legged friend can’t reach them.
Visitors
Are you going to be having young children over during the next few weeks? Your visitors may be very interested in your pet, and may want to hold or play with the little guy. Consider the age and maturity of your guests. Little children, especially toddlers, can be unintentionally rough, and may accidentally drop or hurt small animals. Supervise all interactions carefully. Also, make sure your guests don’t give your furry buddy any treats that aren’t safe.
Gifts
Pocket pets deserve presents too! Chew toys are always popular with these little guys. Your tiny pal will also appreciate treats, a new hidey-hole, or even a bigger cage.
Petproofing
Be extra careful when letting your pet out of their cage after you’ve decorated. Tinsel, lights, ornament hooks, and toxic plants are all hazardous to our furry pals! Keep a close eye on your little buddy, and don’t leave him unattended.
