Dogs are both smart and intuitive. They also have pretty sharp senses! Fido’s furry ears can detect sound much better than ours can. His adorable nose also offers him massive amounts of information about the world. Man’s Best Friend has also had plenty of time to get to know us, and has become pretty good at reading us. In this article from Arapahoe Animal Hospital, your Boulder, CO vet serving Louisville and surrounding areas, a vet list some things dog can tell about you.
What Animals You Petted
Don’t expect to pet your friend’s cat without your pup noticing. Dogs can easily pick up the smells of other animals on their humans. Fido may be a bit jealous, but after a few belly rubs, he’ll forgive and forget.
Your Mood
Dogs are very good at judging our moods. This is one reason it’s so important to only train Fido when you are feeling cheerful. Otherwise, your furry student may form a bad association with training, and could become wary of school. That’s the last thing you want! (Note: Fido may also know that begging will be more successful when you’re in a good mood, but that’s another topic.)
What You Ate
We know, Fido’s affectionate puppy kisses are adorable. However, these aren’t just a way for your pup to show his adoration. Your canine pal can smell your lunch on your breath, even if you brushed your teeth or chewed some breath mints.
Where You’ve Been
Dogs learn all sorts of things about the world by picking up scents. For instance, when Fido sniffs the neighbor’s yard, he can find out who has been there, whether they were male or female, how old they are, and possibly whether they are sick or not. And, when you get home, your canine buddy will be able to get an idea about where you’ve been by sniffing you.
Your Health
This one isn’t universal, as every pooch is a bit different. However, there are many amazing stories about dogs acting in an unusual manner shortly before their owners had strokes, seizures, heart attacks, or other medical issues. Fido also tends to stick close and offer extra cuddles to his human pals when they aren’t feeling well.
