Are you planning to take your dog camping or hiking this summer? If so, that’s great! Dogs love exploring new places! Plus, the sunshine, fresh air, and exercise are all just as good for Fido as they are for us. Just be sure to always put your pet’s safety first. In this article from Arapahoe Animal Hospital, your Boulder, CO vet, serving Louisville and surrounding areas, a local vet discusses taking your canine pal out and about.
ID
Before taking your four-legged buddy on a fun excursion, make sure he is spayed or neutered, and up to date on all vaccines and parasite control products. This is very important! If your dog has a run-in with another animal, and you can’t prove that he is current on his rabies shots, you could find yourself in a legal nightmare. Protecting your pet from dangerous parasites, like ticks and heartworm, is crucial as well. Your furry friend should also be microchipped and wearing current ID tags. Ask your vet for more information.
Training
We recommend that all dogs know the five most important commands, which are
Sit, Stay, Come, Heel,
and
Lay Down
. This is very important, both for Fido’s safety and the safety of others. For instance, teaching your pet to
Stay
can keep him from approaching a wild animal or venturing too close to a cliff, while the command to
Come
can stop him from running off after a squirrel.
Leashes
Keep your canine friend leashed at all times when you are out and about. Although you can bring a retractable leash, we don’t recommend using these in areas with potential hazards, like around campfires or near riverbanks.
Water
Speaking of water, always bring plenty of H20 for your canine companion. Try not to let Fido drink from rivers, streams, or ponds, as the water may not be safe. Look for collapsible plastic dishes, or doggy water bottles with attached bowls, which are lightweight and easy to carry.
Safety
Keep Fido away from potential hazards, such as campfires, wild animals, trash, and toxic plants. You’ll also want to watch your furry buddy closely, and make sure he isn’t hot, thirsty, or tired. Also, never leave your pooch unattended near water. Better safe than sorry!
