Bulldogs Are Beautiful Day

April 15, 2020

April 23 rd is Bulldogs Are Beautiful Day! While we think all dogs are beautiful, bulldogs have a special charm that makes them adorable in an unconventional way. In this article from Arapahoe Animal Hospital, a Boulder, CO vet discusses these lovable pooches.

Basics

The Bulldog has a long history, which begins in Britain. Long ago, these dogs specialized in bull baiting, a cruel sport that we are happy to report has long since fallen by the wayside. Breeders took specific care to breed aggression out of these pooches and, well, it’s pretty safe to say they succeeded. The modern bulldog is typically a sweet, patient couch potato that is great with kids, and makes a wonderful family pet.

Cartoons

The Bulldog has often been depicted in cartoons. Several animated bulldogs have made it to the small screen, including Spike from Tom and Jerry and Bandit from Johnny Quest.

Popularity

According to the American Kennel Club they were the 5 th most popular purebred in 2017 in the US. However, this popularity is not a new thing. During World War II, Prime Minister Winston Churchill was often favorably compared to a bulldog, because of his tenacity.

Breeds

There are actually several different types of bulldogs. Some popular ones include the American Bulldog to the Australian Bulldog, the French Bulldog, and the Serrano Bulldog. We think they’re all pretty cute!

Health

Bulldogs have some specific traits that owners need to be aware of. For one thing, they do age fairly quickly, and have a shorter lifespan than many other dogs. Fido may become a senior as early as age six! Hip dysplasia is quite common with these cute pups, as are interdigital cysts. It’s very important to find a good vet, and bring your canine pal in regularly.

Activity

Bulldogs are quite calm by nature, and are usually quite happy just relaxing with their owners. However, like any other dog, Fido will have occasional bursts of zoominess. Don’t let your pet overexert himself! Fido can lose his breath very easily, which can be dangerous.

Heat

Be extra vigilant in hot weather. Never leave Fido outdoors without shade and water. Although your pet may enjoy splashing around in a wading pool, bulldogs typically are not very good swimmers. Don’t leave your pup near water unattended.
