Autumn is here, and the temperatures are starting to drop. Younger dogs often get quite playful at this time of year. Many of our canine companions love classic fall doggy activities, like jumping in leaf piles and taking in the beautiful foliage! However, older pups may be more interested in snuggling up in their beds. If your canine pal is in his golden years, you’ll want to give him some extra TLC at this time of year. In this article from Arapahoe Animal Hospital, your Boulder, CO veterinary hospital, serving Louisville and surrounding areas, a vet discusses caring for an older dog in fall.
Grooming
Dead fur, dust, and dander will make Fido’s coat itchy and uncomfortable, and will interfere with its natural insulating abilities. Brush your pup regularly. This is particularly important for dogs with long or thick coats. If your four-legged friend has thin fur, he’ll need a good jacket.
Veterinary Care
Older dogs usually need to come in a bit more often than their younger buddies. If Fido hasn’t been in for a while, take him now, before it gets cold and slippery.
Falls
Slipping and falling is just as dangerous for older dogs as it is for human seniors. Use pet-safe de-icing agents to help give Fido traction. Paw balm or wax will help keep your canine friend’s paws moist, and prevent painful cracks and chapping. Nail trims are also important for traction.
Food
Fido may need to eat a little bit more at this time of year, especially if he is thin or has thin fur. Your furry pal may also benefit from certain supplements, such as glucosamine or fish oil, particularly if he has bone/joint issues, such as hip dysplasia. Ask your vet for specific advice.
Comforts
Make sure Fido has a good doggy bed to curl up in on those chilly nights. Orthopedic beds are usually best for senior dogs. Your furry buddy may also appreciate having a soft, washable throw blanket on his bed.
Schedule
Autumn is a perfect time to enjoy some relaxing walks with your furry bff. However, Fido may have trouble seeing when it’s dark out. Stick to well-lit areas for nighttime walks, or take a flashlight with you.
