Are your pet’s belongings scattered throughout the house? Do you have dog toys all over your floor? We can help! In this article from Arapahoe Animal Hospital, your Boulder, CO vet serving Louisville and surrounding areas, a vet offers tips on organizing Fido’s things.
Create A Walk Station
Designate a specific area for Fido’s walking supplies. Ideally, this should be by the door. You can use a stand-alone cabinet, or a hanging coat hook with cupboards. You can also use a cloth grocery bag on a hook. Keep your pup’s leash there, as well as his clothing, waste baggies, and treats.
Discard and Replace
Dogs can go through toys pretty quickly. It doesn’t take very long for your pet’s things to get crusty and, well, pretty gross. After all, Fido does use his mouth to play. Regularly go through your pup’s playthings, and clean the toys that are still in good shape, either by machine washing them or putting them in the dishwasher on the hot cycle with no soap. Discard anything that is ripped or torn, and replace it. Then, get a basket or trunk to keep your furry friend’s toys in.
Have A Dedicated Space
Choose a specific drawer, cabinet, shelf, or storage basket for your dog’s things. Keep your pup’s records in one convenient folder or binder. You may want to have more than one spot: for instance, you may want to use a specific shelf for Fido’s food, a basket for his toys, and a drawer for his medications.
Keep A Travel Bag
Keep a travel bag ready for your furry best friend. This should include food, treats, blankets, toys, a spare leash and collar, towels, a brush, waste baggies, dishes, and a pet first-aid kit. You may also want to include important paperwork, such as your dog’s medical records and some first-aid brochures. That way, this can also double as an emergency bag.
Get An Attractive Pet Food Storage Container
Who says you have to have half-empty bags of treats on your counter? Get an attractive cookie jar and keep Fido’s treats in that. You can get a plastic storage bin to store Fido’s kibble. For smaller pups, a pitcher may work well for this. Remember to wash these containers out regularly.
